Spacious DIY Off-The-Grid Tiny House
This stunning off the grid home in Australia may be tiny, but it has a very big story to tell. Constructed as a do-it-yourself build by recent empty-nesters Jan and Kev, this tiny house is open, spacious very efficient and completely off the grid.
When the last of their adult children left home, Jan and Kev decided it was time to redesign their lives. Constructing a tiny house on wheels was a fantastic way of freeing up capital and living a more simple lifestyle which would give them plenty of opportunity to travel and focus on the things in life which are important to them.
The home was constructed as a DIY project as Jan and Kev got stuck into all aspects of the build themselves. With no prior building experience, the tiny house was certainly a challenging project and the couple admit there were more than a few arguments throughout the process including a few walk-offs. Ultimately though, together they have built a beautiful home which has taught the couple they really can achieve anything they set their minds to.
Even though it’s a tiny house, there’s still plenty of space for entertaining their family when they come over. The couple are currently expanding on their home by adding a large deck, which will be completely under cover giving a lot of additional outdoor living space to capitalise on the fabulous Queensland weather.
The home is designed to be completely off the grid and doesn’t require any connection to services. Solar panels on the roof and a sizeable battery storage system provides the home with an abundance of energy, while a large water tank efficiently collects rain-water for the home.
Inside, the tiny house is extra spacious, as the couple constructed the home at a width of 3 meters (10ft) giving them lots of room for their interior design, which includes a very large lounge area, a panoramic sliding door, comprehensive kitchen, sleeping loft and a very luxurious bathroom.
Within the walls of this home, Kev and Jan have everything they need. Outside of the home, they have given just as much attention to designing a wonderful lifestyle for themselves. With the children leaving home, the entrepreneurial couple decided to start their own business, so they could work together, work less hours and do something they love. They have converted an old retro caravan into a full service smoothie bar where on weekends they sell at markets and special events. This allows the couple to work a flipped week of 2 days on and 5 days off. Certainly not a bad lifestyle!
