Growing Family Builds Second Tiny Home For Expanding Homestead – Revisited
When we first visited Phil, him and his wife Cynthia were living in a beautiful, whimsical tiny house in Tofino BC. He was completely off the grid, powering his home with solar, hydro and even human power via a bicycle. Be sure to check out our first tour of the home here.
In this revisited episode, almost two years after our first visit, we travel again to meet Phil and his growing family, this time at a new parking spot on Salt Spring Island. After finding out they were pregnant, Phil and Cynthia decided to expand on their home, building a second tiny house to help accomodate the needs of a young family.
The new set-up provides ample space for the couple and their young son. All around the home has been beautifully landscaped to create wonderful organic gardens, which are planted around the solar panels which provide the family with an abundance of energy.
Often, I’m asked what couples who live in tiny homes do when they decide to start families. Constructing a second tiny house like this is perhaps one of the best solutions that I have seen so far. The second home adds so much versatility to their set-up, and one day, as the child grows older could even become a completely self-contained space for them as a teenager, and perhaps even something which they can take with them when they leave home.
